Hardware Design Engineer

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to the Project Manager - Wireless Solutions, the Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design, test, and validation of WEDGE hardware for the following applications:

  • Measurement (sensors)
  • Data acquisition
  • Equipment control
  • Communications (primarily wireless)

WEDGE (http://www.westernone.ca/wedge) is a measurement and control platform that enables our construction customers to decrease costs, mitigate risk, and improve quality of work.

The WEDGE R&D team specializes in the development and deployment of practical, rugged, and reliable technology solutions for challenging environments. This includes in-house development of custom hardware, software, and web components.

Additionally, the Hardware Design Engineer will work closely with WesternOne’s contract manufactures to ensure timely delivery of quality hardware.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze and refine/develop requirements for robust solutions;
  • Translate requirements into manufacturable/supportable hardware products;
  • Prepare time/cost estimates and provide recommendations when options exist;
  • End-to-end development of PCBs (circuit development, layout, prototype manufacture, verification);
  • Development of complete hardware prototypes;
  • Provide ongoing support as required;
  • Selection and management of contract manufacturers;
  • Preparation of documentation for contract manufacturers (e.g. BoMs, test, assembly);
  • Management of contract manufacturers (e.g. first piece evaluations).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with 3-5 years of experience is required;
  • Familiar with Altium Designer as schematic capture and PCB design tool.

Experience with the following:

  • Microprocessors/microcontrollers, memory, A/D and D/A conversion, signal processing, sensors;
  • USB, SPI, I2C, WLAN, Ethernet interfaces;
  • Low power wireless networks (LPWAN e.g. ZigBee);
  • GPS;
  • Cellular modems;
  • Hands-on electronic troubleshooting and prototype assembly (soldering);
  • Experienced selecting, engaging, and managing contract manufacturers;
  • Strong self-initiative - able to work independently in a fast-paced development environment;
  • Prefer to work in an agile, developer-centric project;
  • Strong English communication skills (written/verbal);
  • Comfortable with field work as required;
  • Test engineering experience would be considered an asset.
